GLAANI.

The story opens in a hospital in Haryana, where we see Savitri (VidyaBalan) undergoing sex determination while her husband Dushyant(Manoj Bajpayee) looks towards her and says, “We have to.” Savitri pleads but in vain. “It’s a girl.” Replies the doctor. Savitri cries.

Dushyant and Savitri return home and argue. The argument is so audible that their 3 year old daughter wakes up from her sleep and approaches their room. Seeing her standing at the door, Dushyant commands her to go to sleep as they continue their banter.

During this banter, Dushyant pushes Savitri so hard that she hits the bed & falls down unconscious. She opens her eyes in the same hospital where she sees Dushyant smiling at her and Dushyant exclaims, “Thank u!” and leaves.

Come forward Savitri’s mother, Seema(Jaya Bachchan) who tells Savitri that in order to save her life the doctors had t0 take out her foetus. Both Savitri and Seema seem to have broken down and so finally Savitri decides to file a case against her own husband, Dushyant claiming that he was responsible for the death of her female child and also in the same case she holds Dushyant responsible for giving her a female child.

A reluctant police officer files Savitri’s case which causes a huge uproar in the media. In a state like Haryana lawyers are reluctant on taking Savitri’s case because of which she decides to fight her own case. Savitri, her daughter and Seema start to receive death threats but Savitri is undeterred and all ready to fight the case.

She gets police protection and before anything else, the court has to decide whether such a case can be accepted or not. With some pressure of the officials on the judiciary, they instigate Naina Roy(Sushmita Sen) as the judge for this case.

On the day of the case, Savitri is surprised to see the public prosecutor to be her father, Rajnath (Boman Irani). Seema and Rajnath had a divorce when Savitri was 3 years old and Rajnath tells Savitri that she has an elder brother, Tanmay(Rajkummar Rao), who neither Savitri nor Seema have met ever since their divorce. Rajnath takes a dig at Seema by saying that glad he took a divorce from Seema had he known that their daughter would be such a person. This infuriates Savitri but before she can act, Naina comes into the court and asks for proceedings to start.

Savitri shows all reports of her sex determination to the judge and asks that Dushyant should be booked under the section of forced sex determination and domestic violence. Rajnath speaks nothing but when Savitri puts the point that it was Dushyant who impregnated her with a female sperm. This goes down to be hilarious and both, Rajnath and Naina ask for proof. She then begins by illustrating that it is generally a man’s choice in sex determination of the child and a woman cannot be blamed for the same because a man’s sperm is of 2 types and it is generally their sperm that decides the sex of the baby.

She then gets biologists to confirm this theory and they also cement Savitri’s stand. Convinced enough, Naina accepts the case and books Dushyant under the domestic violence act.

Outside the court, she sees an angry mob burning her face and insulting her. Rajnath approaches Seema and Savitri and says, “Let’s see till which area u can go safe.” And suddenly rings Savitri’s phone, “If u want to see ur daughter alive, take back the case.” and Savitri and Seema return home and find that her daughter is missing.

Clueless on what to do, Savitri decides to take the case back. Meanwhile, Seema tells Savitri that Rajnath insisted that she has an abortion when he came to know that Seema had a baby girl. Instead, she decided to divorce him and raise Savitri on her own. In her own mind, Savitri feels that history is repeating itself and the media are not letting the hype die out.

Naina at her bungalow is revisits about how she fought with her husband to bring up her daughter, who is now married. “Today life has brought you to the same platform where u fought with me over a similar thing. Today which one are u going to choose?” asks Naina’s wheelchair bound husband. “Whatever I will chose the right thing.”Replies Naina.

Meanwhile, Savitri and Seema along with the help of police are trying to locate Savitri’s daughter. Savitri gets a ransom call inspite of being asked to withdraw the case . The police locate the call in an abandoned warehouse where they see Savitri’s daughter lying unconscious surrounded by 4 goons. The police try to nab them but are unsuccessful to do so. They have a round of gunshots after which the goons try to escape, while escaping one of the goons shoots Savitri who lies down unconscious, though the police manage to save her daughter.

The movie shifts focus to the next hearing of the court where we see a suited Seema representing her daughter, Savitri after the incident is in the ICU and her daughter has come to court with her granny, Seema. The day starts with interrogation of the hospital staff and in the conclusion, the court cancels their license. The court asks Seema for more proofs in order to get Dushyant convicted. But, Seema asks for some for time to which Naina agrees.

Media gets the news that the case has now turned into a battle of husband-wife, who at no cost can allow each other to win. There is a knock on Seema’s door where she is seen supported by many other woman who also were a victim to sex determination and lost their child. Soon, this war turns into a movement with many woman coming out in support of Savitri. Seema gets support but is not able to get any evidence against Dushyant.

Seema out of options, begins to track Rajnath. She reaches Rajnath’s place where she hears Rajnath speaking to someone over the phone, “Don’t worry. Seema would not be able to prove anything. U just relax.” Curious to know who called Rajnath, Seema seeks help of another woman to follow but while she is leaving, Rajnath’s gaurds catch hold of Seema and present her in front of him who says, “Seema, Seema, Seemau woman are so irritating and shameless. It’s been 26 yearssince we got divorced, todayalso u live an illusion where u think that u can progress .This is Haryana, here woman do not have the guts to fight their husband for anything have started a revolt. What do u think of urself? Take her and lock her in the basement. She should not reach court tomorrow. I will get the case dismissed  saying that u are an escapist. U lacked evidence so to avoid defeat u didn’t turn up”

Seema feels helpless. She can’t do anything. She spends the night in the room of the basement and the next morning, a tired Savitri sees the light of the day when Tanmay opens the door to explore the house. Seema is both happy and sad to see Tanmay and tells him everything about what happened 26 years ago. Tanmay is shocked and drives Seema to court, meanwhile Seema calls up one of the ladies supporting her to inquire about Savitri and Savitri’s daughter. She is relieved to hear that Savitri’s daughter is safe but is worried when she knows that Savitri is missing.

She gets worried, calls up the doctor, in the hospital but is unable to locate her. Meanwhile, Tanmay rings up his friend, DSP and access Rajnath’s call records. He hands over the call records to his mother immediately reaches the court to find an injured Savitri fighting against Rajnath. She enters the court and as per the procedures, she steps into the witness box and says that it was Rajnath who locked her up in his bungalow and it was Tanmay who opened the door and saved her. Tanmay agrees. He also mentions that he is ashamed of his m=father and the people who have such mentalities towards women. He apologises to Seema and Savitri and comes off the deck.

Seema takes over the case from  an injured Savitri and says, “Sorry your honour. I would like Mr. Roy to be called into court as some proceedings can’t carry on without him.” Naina is shocked but orders Mr. Roy to be present.

Mr. Roy is brought in. Seema shows the call records of Rajnath and Mr. Roy where it has been evident that eversince the start of the case, Rajnath and Roy were in contact and Mr. Roy also had contacts with the goons who might have abducted Savitri’s daughter.

“Haan. It was me who got Savitri’s child abducted. It was me, who asked the goons to shoot anyone who tried to rescue that girl.” Says Mr. Roy. “But why?” asks Seema. “To teach all u woman that u have limits in which u should stay. U should not cross though. It is Haryana, where sex determination is legal. Every woman is bound to limits amd chains. Had I not been wheelchair bound, my wife would have also been at home.”  Replies Mr. Roy. This hurts Naina a lot but due to commitment issues she cannot show it to others.

Naina concludes by saying, “That today’s verdict is a verdict that all of Indian women should know about. It is nothing short of the bondages that a woman has broken. And because of some male chauvinists this freedom cannot be limited. I hereby conclude by convicting Mr. Dushyant for domestic violence and sex determination. Mr. Roy, Mr. Dushyant and Mr. Rajnath for devising a child’s abduction to prove their point. The court would like to condemn the actions of the hospital and appreciate Mrs. Seema and Mrs. Savitri for bringing in the courage and effort for speaking up for all the women in the country. The court is adjourned.”

Seema and Savitri hug each other as tears roll down their cheeks. Tanmay meets his mother and sister after 26 years and apologises for Rajnath’s behavior. Savitri (still unwell) is taken out by Tanmay and her daughter outside the court where politicians, women and the media are appreciating and lauding their efforts. They are soon joined by Naina, who apologises and condemns her husband’s behavior towards the family.  And the story ends!

JJ Review: Watch Real Life Animation! Innovative and Beautiful!

Jagga Jasoos finally released after a delay of 4 years,  but was it worth the wait?  Let's find that out. JJ is a proud attempt at musicals in Bollywood.  The movie did go haywire but does deserve applaud for its attempt.

Image result for jagga jasoos poster

Ranbir Kapoor as the lead protagonist Jagga is outstanding. His stammering, acting,  eyes emotions are well depicted.  Saswata Chaterjee as Jagga's father does an amazing job. His act is short but effective. Katrina Kaif like always is ineffective and just a pretty face. Saurabh Shukla as ACP Sinha is amusing and entertaining. Everyone except Katrina do an excellent job.

Image result for jagga jasoos poster

The major attraction of the movie is its music. Given by Pritam,  the music is nice but at times goes a little too overboard. Songs like "Ullu ka Pattha", "Galti se Mistake" are simply amazing and foot tapping.  It's not easy to watch the movie that has 29 songs if the story and screenplay are not tight enough to hold viewers attention. And the movie misfires at this level. A lousy screenplay ruin this good musical and it's pace.  Had the screenplay been taut JJ would have been a great musical. Nonetheless,  the direction,  lyrics,  dialogues(which have a lyrical approach to them) are good. Anurag Basu does try to craft a masterpiece but fails. What is really great is that JJ gives us major feels of an animation movie.  It brings animation come alive in real life with real actors.  Such was the brilliance of its camerawork. Innovative!

                                        Related image
With all things said,  JJ could have been a better movie but with main ingredient of story and screenplay missing,  JJ settles for a one time watch. The movie should be watched because of it being a potential musical and it is thoroughly a Disney Movie with colours,  vibrancy all over. I am going with 3 stars for the movie and another half star for Ranbir's effortless performance. Box Office should be between 55-75 crores. The movie is following Dil Dhadakne Do's trend.

Image result for 3 and 1/2 stars

Like Ranbir's 2015 gem, Tamasha, Jagga Jasoos is bound to have extreme  reactions of audience- Either good or bad. Barely will an "Ok type" be heard for this movie.

P.S. Do NOT watch JJ if you don't like musicals and you prefer a fast pace movie because JJ is slow.

M0M Review: All moms are the best, this M0M reasserts the same! Impeccable!

Sridevi's  comeback movie released this week. Mom stars Sridevi, Akshaye Khanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sajal Ali, Adnan Siddiqui and Abhimanyu Singh. The movie has been shot in the busy city of Delhi and also features locales of Himachal Pradesh. The movie tells us how far a mother can go for their child.

Sridevi as Devki makes a stunning depiction of a mother seeking revenge. Her makeup, the expressions are a delight to watch. Nawazuddin as DK, the detective is absolutely flawless. His role as a detective is impeccable. Impeccably styled, his accent are all on point. Akshaye Khanna as the investigating officer Mathews is outstanding. Providing impeccable support to Sridevi and Nawaz he also stands out. A highly underrated actor Akshaye is. Sajal Ali as Arya delivers a standout performance. Her eyes express the grief of a rape victim. She makes the audience feel her pain. Adnan Siddiqui as Anand, the father has not much to offer but does justice to his part. Abhimanyu Singh as the baddie is impeccable. Again, an underrated actor. Mom does not falter even once on acting grounds.
Image result for mom movie poster
The movie absolutely has NO faults in the technical departments. The story somehow has been depicted on-screen a couple of times but not with this excellence. Surprisingly the movie's logic does not falter one bit. The story does have subtle undertones of mother-daughter relationship which make this drama emotional. The amazing treatment of the movie makes it different from other revenge dramas ever made. The dialogues, screenplay are absolutely on point and impactful and taut. The cinematography is absolutely brilliant. The music and background score by maestro A.R.Rahman is fabulous. The background score adds tempo and nail biting experience of the movie. It was hard to believe that debutant director Ravi Udyawar has crafted such an amazing masterpiece. His narration of the story carries you into the story and does not allow you to come out until the last frame of the movie is over. An impeccable debut by him!

There were only 2 things that disappointed me in Mom: 1.) Sridevi's accent. Being a south-indian actor her accent improvement has been commendable but here a little heavier voice like that of Vidya Balan or Swara Bhaskar would have done the trick. None the less, her eyes to an extent compensate for her accent. 2.) A little bit of predictability and 'Bollywood TWIST'  (Please Note : TWIST and not LOGIC!) somehow weakened this powerful movie a bit.

Mom easily emerges as the Best Movie of 2017 and there could have not been a better start to the 2nd half of 2017. I am going with 4 stars for this amazing rollercoster ride of emotions and thrill. Invest yourself in the movie and you won't regret. The business of the movie will be around 35-50 crores because it is a multiplex oriented movie hence it will difficult for the movie to cash in at single screens and the word of mouth is absolutely terrific.

                                   Image result for 4.25 stars

P.S. The movie has borrowed it's principal storyline from the Raveena Tandon movie 'MAATR' BUT what makes it different  is its spectacular treatment and the delightful performances. Do watch it. U won't regret it.

Feminism and Cinema.

"Feminism is being true to yourself. In this era, 'feminism' has adopted a corrupt identity and women do not want an association with such a term. The social stigma in this age has depreciated the literal meaning of feminism. I would call myself a feminist. According to me, Indian cinema is a propagator of evils like patriarchy and therefore, helping in emancipation and empowerment of women."" These lines were said by Kalki Koechlin in an interview where she was asked to draw a line between Feminism and Women Empowerment. Her words stand true to date.
                                                  Image result for kalki koechlin

Firstly, let's not confuse between Feminism and Women Empowerment.  Feminism is the advocation of equal rights for females whereas Women Empowerment is the ROAD that we take to achieve the "supposed" feminism. And just to some up what feminism is NOT.....
Image result for bollywood and Feminism

The world of cinema has some striking statements when it comes to feminism. Where actors, film-makers have made pro-feminism statements, their movies paint an entirely different picture. From mentally and physically abused women to cheated housewives our cinematic world has portrayed it all.

In Hollywood, feminine characters have been breaking every now and then. Bollywood is struggling with it's stereotypes. Where Jolie played Christine Roberts in 'Changeling', Meryl Streep  in Devil Wears Prada have portrayed strong fictional female characters and though Bollywood has really given us some strong female characters but only of lately. Juhi Chawla in Benaam Baadshah, Nutan in Khaandaan or more recently Sonakshi Sinha in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara have potrayed stereotypical roles in films.
Image result for meryl streep in dwpImage result for jolie in changeling

Eversince the release of the  2008 hit movie Fashion, Bollywood has finally understood how to get feminism right. Characters like Bipasha from Corporate, Zoya from Raanjhanaa,  Swara in Anarkali of Aarah , Datto in TWMR, Sridevi in English vinglish etc. screamed of feminism, foul mouthed people like our CBFC chairperson, Pahlaj Nihalani wanted to stop this fire of feminism. The entire fiasco around 'Lipstick Under My Burkha' was baseless as Mr. Nihalani wanted that woman should and always be 'pure'. But gladly, he lost this battle and the movie is up for release.

With such mentally challenged people sitting as the head of films, expression of female characters remain doubtful because such people allow more Mr.Nihalanis to pop up. These mentally challenged people should be handed over to the women of the country and beaten black and blue to make them realize a woman's true worth.

We tend to rely statements that are said by the people from the film fraternity. This is because we as the common audience rely on what is depicted by the media who majorly focus on the film fraternity. Hence, they become role models for both men and women who are inspired by their speeches and begin to act. The sense of responsibility that we expect to see in them is prevalent.
                                         Related image

But speeches alone don't work. Relevant change through cinema is ignored as seen in Anarkali of Aarah, Corporate, Fire, Phobia etc. flopped because they depicted a strong feminine character which beat up the male character.
Image result for corporate movieImage result for anarkali of aarah

Actors like Kangana Ranaut, Kalki Koechlin, Swara Bhaskar, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor etc have been vocal about feminism we need to support such celebrities who are doing their bit to bring a change in the society! But Sonam Kapoor's recent statement, " I am the girliest girl possible but I cannot accept that I am a feminist because I want support." speaks volumes that our society needs to change. Unless and until we don't bring a visible change, nothing is going to happen of our cinema.

And once again, as Kalki has summed it up here, it is very true!

Bollywood's Half Yearly Report Card.

Bollywood in 2017 has given us very bad movies sans a few beautiful and good movies. Many of these beautiful movies were low on promotion and small budget, hence their box office collection and worldwide recognition is far apart. This was reflected in Bollywood's stats where out of 85 releases only 12 have been average or hit at the box office which bring the success ratio to 14.16%. much lower than last year's 22.68%.

Bollywood needs to buck up its money game especially when the much anticipated Tubelight has failed miserably on our expectations. Though surprises like Badrinath ki Dulhania, The Ghazi Attack which restored my faith in Bollywood.

In this list I am going to talk about the top 5 movies that released in this half of the year as well as the worst 3 movies of the year with a short note for the reason of my choice.

*Baahubali- 2 and The Ghazi Attack will not feature in this list because they are NOT Bollywood movies.

THE WORST 3.
3. OK Jaanu: Poor Screenplay, Poor Performances, Below Average Music.
2.  Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai: 2 hr long lecture on female empowerment, Terrible story and execution.
1. MSG 2: The Lion heart: Everything!

Where these movies questioned my faith as a movie lover and critic, there were some movies that still made me love Bollywood. These include:

The BEST 5.

5. Anarkali of Aarah: Amazing Screenplay, Terrific Performances.

3. Meri Pyaari Bindu: (A Personal Favourite but certain flaws which as a critic I can't ignore!) Superlative Performances, Unique Storytelling, Foot-Tapping Retro Music.

2. Trapped: Ground breaking Performance by RR, Sleek Direction, Taut Screenplay.
                                                             Related imageSource: imdb.com

1.Hindi Medium: Superb Performances by Saba and Irrfan, Great Story and Direction. Satirically brilliant. Good Music. HM easily emerges as Half Yearly Topper.
Image result for Hindi medium movieSource: koimoi.com

Honourable Mentions: Begumjaan, Kaabil and Jolly LLB 2.

Bollywood's 2017 report card is disappointing both in terms of box office and content. It is high time that film-makers stopped making a joke out of the audiences and stopped delivering anything stupid.

Best Actor(Male): Irrfan Khan for Hindi Medium.
                                          Related imageSource: Maddock Films.

Best Actor(Female): Swara Bhaskar for Anarkali of Aarah.
Image result for swara bhaskar Anarkali of aarah

So that's all folk. The content game of Bollywood is going strong but box office is on a low. With Jab Harry Met Sejal, Jagga Jasoos, Toilet- Ek Prem Katha, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Judwaa 2, Golmaal 4 etc to hit the theatres, we just hope that the business of Bollywood increases compared to last year!

TubeLight Review: This Tubelight Flickers and Ultimately Fuses.

Tube Light is Salman Khan's 2017 Eid gift. In 2015 Salman Khan surprised us by offering Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a movie that struck the strings of our heart. 2016 was Sultan which otherwise was an average watch. Just as I thought Salman was getting better at his content game, Tubelight dropped.

                                                           Image result for Tubelight

Salman Khan as Laxman Singh Bisht is a let down. A character where he was supposed to emote with his eyes and recreate something like BB, he somewhat fails and delivers an average performance. Sohail Khan as Bharat Singh Bisht, is surprisingly good. He essays the role with good conviction. The kid, Martin Tangu delivers the best performance. His innocence his visible through his eyes. Though he remains unmatched to Harshaali Malhotra, he does his best in his zone. Zhu Zhu, the actress makes a fair debut by all bollywood standards. The movie also features the terrific Om Puri who as usual gave a very impressive performance. SRK in his cameo, disappoints.

Image result for Tubelight movie cast

The camera work, the cinematography, the locales, the dialogues and the lyrics have something or the other which seems to be missing. Kabir Khan, who otherwise is an impressive film maker, surprises with a dull narration, poor screenplay of otherwise a good story. The movie does have its moments but they come too late to save this faulty tubelight.

But like it has always been, no one looks for logic in a Salman Khan movie, Tubelight is no exception. Had the narration been a little better and Salman Khan would have given BB feels, Tubelight could have emerged as his best movie.  Poor entertainment levels, and some MAJOR MISSING entertainment  value and too much reliability on emotions, Tubelight flickers and ultimately fuses. I am going with 2.5 stars.

                                                   Image result for 2.5 stars

P.S : Look out for the next article, 'Bollywood's Half Yearly Report Card' to know whether Tubelight made it to the Top 5 of my list.

A Death in the Gunj Review: Go Gunjing Here! Surreal, Intriguing and Brilliant.

ADITG is a movie which perhaps many of us do not know about. To begin with, it is the debut of the fantastic actress Konkana Sen Sharma and features an ensemble cast of Kalki Koechlin, Vikrant Massy, Gulshan Deviah, Om Puri sir, Tanuja, Ranvir Shorey and Tillotama Shome. With such an ensemble cast of actors and not 'stars', ADITG surprises.
Image result for a death in the gunj poster

With such brilliant 'actors' on board, a movie can never gone wrong on the acting stage. Like I have said earlier, Vikrant Massy has to be the 'find of 2017'. He plays Shyamlal 'Shutu' with finesse and to perfection. Gulshan Deviah as Nandu, Kalki as Mimi and Ranvir Shorey as Vikram give solid performances which are ably backed by Tanuja and Om Puri sir. Jim Sarbh as Brian shines in the movie with his fine English accent and emotions.

Image result for a death in the gunj cast

ADITG introduces us to director, Konkana Sen Sharma. Like her acting prowess, her directorial skills are top-notch. She should rightfully walk away with "The Best Debut Director" trophy. Sharma takes proper care of the script, its setting which talk about the details she cares for. Fantastically scripted in the likes of an Agatha Christie novel, ADITG has brilliant direction, camerawork, dialogues and subtle undertones of dark humor which feel likable and at times relatable. Though the English language used in the movie maybe a hurdle for the people, but otherwise ADITG cannot be missed. The movie has some MAJOR goofups because of which ADITG becomes a slightly disappointing watch. The predictable climax, a somewhat lousy screenplay and the background score which sounds creepy. ADITG fills one with eeriness and creates an intriguing world which all of a sudden seems to disappear. And that's a drawback of the movie.
                                              Related image

Anyways, with all said and done, ADITG should NOT be missed. Though, it's more of an indie film which might not suit the pallet of many a people but for those who like engaging cinema, don't give it a miss. I am going with 4/5 for A Death in the Gunj. Surreal, intriguing and Brilliantly presented.

                                       Image result for 4 stars

Don't miss a directorial debut so stunning and brilliant.
The movie unfortunately won't go far in the box office run as we are quite 'intolerant' towards meaningful and engaging cinema and part of which can be blamed for minimal promotions. The movie will make a maximum of 50 million (5 crores) at the box office solely in the name of Konkana.

Sushant Singh Rajput: An Inspiration and a Legend!
